Vasco 4. Zegama to Salvatierra/Aguarin (22 km)

This was the anticipated hard but scenic day. It was a beautiful day with a variety of scenery, more than 800 m gain in elevation (over 8 km), then down half that over another 8 km. We had refreshments in a Bar in Zalduondo, and then did a 6 km trudge on roadside into Salvatierra/Aguarin. I will let the photos do the talking.

The albergue is right beside the sport centre at the end of town – there are various phone numbers posted, and I had to go in the unmarked back door of the building beside the albergue and find the key in the “office.” We shared the albergue with the Swiss woman in one room and we had the other room. In true pilgrim fashion we walked several extra km looking for food and ended up getting delicious donair for take-way, supplemented from the grocery store. We have been preparing breakfasts the night before and just looking for coffee in the mornings.

On the way up
Made it!
St. Adrian’s tunnel is in sight
Up close
Marching the Roman road down
Nice shady forests, downhill
Long hot stretch into town
