Vasco/Bayona 10. Briviesca to Service area de la Brújula (23 km)

OK, I’ll admit it. Today was not very interesting. Except the Dutch couple came by while we were having lunch in one town – it was nice to have an encounter with someone we had met before. But when I review the photos, I realize it was rather interesting! This was a very nice stretch.…

Vasco/Bayona 9. Pancorbo to Briviesca (23 km)

Today was a bit monotonous – walk, walk, walk. Mostly along fields not too far from the highways and train tracks to Burgos. Get to a dormant village, take a rest. Walk, walk, walk to another village. The nice mayor gets out of his car to welcome us. Do some cross-training if you are so…

Vasco/Bayona 8. Miranda de Ebro to Pancorbo (17 km)

[I just discovered that I had prepared these drafts but must have been waiting for inspiration before posting. It is time to get them done, so I can plan my next Camino.] Back to October… Today was a great day of walking, with varied scenery and many ripe figs. Even some apple trees by the…

Vasco/Bayona 7. Vitoria to Miranda de Ebro (27 km)

In Camino circles, 25 km sounds like a modest day of walking. But, you know, it is tiring! We wanted to get to Miranda de Ebro, which is about 36 km past Vitoria – too much, we agreed! So we got a taxi to take us 11 km to Subijana de Álava, which was a…

Vasco 6. Rest day in Vitoria/Gasteis

Rest days always seem to involve many km walking around town. Today it also included many steps up into the cathedral tower and down into the foundations! The tour of the renovations of the Cathedral de Santa María was very interesting. After breakfast and the cathedral tour, we returned to the hotel to fetch laundry…

Vasco 5. Salvatierra/Aguarin to Vitoria/Gasteis (29 km)

The weather is hotter than we expected (25C), but today there was a bit of breeze, which helped. We had a reservation in a nice hotel for 2 nights. Some places were full because it is a holiday weekend – the national day of Spain.

Vasco 4. Zegama to Salvatierra/Aguarin (22 km)

This was the anticipated hard but scenic day. It was a beautiful day with a variety of scenery, more than 800 m gain in elevation (over 8 km), then down half that over another 8 km. We had refreshments in a Bar in Zalduondo, and then did a 6 km trudge on roadside into Salvatierra/Aguarin.…

Vasco 3. Beasain to Zegama (17 km)

Yay! Our first day of only walking, even if it was only 17 km. Very pleasant – rain threatened early but did not materialize. Most of the walk was on country paths or along the river. In Zegama we are esconced at the Pensión, feeling satisfied after menús del día, and thinking about an early…
