Invierno 5 – A Rua to Montefurado (10 km by train) to Quiroga (18 km)

I was hoping to walk this whole stage since last time (2022) I took the train for the first 10 km. However, it seems that I am not more energetic this year than last.

So, 7:09 train it was, arriving a few minutes later at the atmospheric and largely abandoned (although I saw at least one car there) hamlet of Montefurado.

It was a chilly day, with a fair amount of up and down, intermittent showers, and almost no dry places to sit and ponder. However, it was green and scenic! Because I didn’t take my usual breaks, I actually got into Quiroga before Laurie, who walked an extra 10 km to start.

For me 18 km was plenty in the drizzle, especially given a steep (up) rocky portion.

We were too late for the menú del día at the restaurant Aroza, but found some hot caldo gallego and more at the friendly Chapakuña 3.

Finally a grocery store stop to re-supply for tomorrow’s May 1 holiday when anything ahead might be open, or not.

  1. Quiroga was completely booked when I was on this stage, so I take the same 7.09 train and then stayed in the Pensión Pacita in A Labrada that had some of the most welcoming owners I’ve encountered. It was that or a over 40 km day…Montefurado was completely dark too. Memories. ¡Buen camino!

  2. Good Grief Clare … the Montefurado Cathedral looks rather ominous … did you catch a glimpse of Stephen King or Dean Kootnz poking around? …

… pictures and blog are awesome … take care of the foot thing …
