Day 21. Atienza to Retortillo de Soria (22 km)

Leaving Atienza, I carried out a meandering tour of the old city, because I couldn’t seem to find my way out.

Then the walk had some nice variety.

The high point of the day was after our walking, with a taxi trip to the small but remarkable church of San Baudelio. Laurie had first learned about this church in 1970, while a student taking a year abroad in Madrid. The original frescoes (dating to the 1200-1300s) from this church have been removed (by a technique called “strappo” in the 1920s and sold to collectors. Today the church is a  protected heritage site but only remnants of the frescoes remain. Even so, it is very impressive

Two Spanish cyclists from Valladolid were at the albergue in Retortillo. They were bicycling the Camino del Cid to Valencia.
