Day 18. Cifuentes to Mandayona (28 km)

Just as we were settling down in our sleeping bags last night, there was a banging at the albergue door.  Two young Spanish cyclists had arrived and were looking for a place to sleep. Since we were occupying the one bedroom, which had 2 sets of bunks (4 beds) plus a stack of 8 mattresses, as well as other random items, we suggested that they take 2 mattresses and put them in the hallway. They were happy to do that. There were 2 bathrooms so we each claimed one.  Finally everything settled down but with all that excitement I didn’t sleep so well.

We started out at about 7:20 this morning. The first village, Moranchal, at 5.7 km, had some murals to admire.

Laurie soon moved ahead. It was warm but not hot. I found some shade of a old stone building for a break. A giant tractor drove by, and the farmer got out to spend 5 minutes looking at something, but otherwise there was no activity.

In Mandayona we stayed at a cute little Hostal Cumbres de Castilla, owned by a couple who moved from Madrid to this depopulated yown of less than 300. Now there are 4 children in the town. Seven more children come from neighbouring villages, to make 11 attending the school.

    • I think so. Some areas that looked suspiciously red this morning were OK, but a bit of rain later got them sticky. But across the next hill, the soil was different and no problem.
