2017 Via de la Plata

Day 16. Cañaveral to Galisteo (20 km + 8 assisted)

I woke up thinking that I didn’t want to walk 28 km today, so at the appropriate turnoff I headed for Rio Lobos,  knowing that everyone else in the group was planning going to go to Galisteo.  Knowing I had a shorter distance really allowed me to enjoy the walk. It included passing a police…

Day 15. Casar de Cáceres to Cañaveral (33 km)

Today – the dreaded long day past the Embalse de Alcántara – was my favourite yet! However I admit that its status began to decline significantly after 30 km. The first half was a beautiful walk in perfect conditions. Then we had a bit of adventure and mischief when we chose to ignore the detour…

Day 14. Valdesalor to Casar de Cáceres (24 km)

Today completes 2 weeks of walking. The first half of the day was to Cáceres, a beautiful historic city. The second half involved an hour of unpleasant highway walking (we might have missed a turnoff) and then a couple more hours to this town. The municipal albergue is not  particularly nice, but only €5 including…

Day 13. Alcuescar to Valdesalor (27 km)

Today was a really nice day – walk was long but not difficult,  and had variety. There was even a jet-powered glider acrobatics display as I crossed a nearby deserted airport. The albergue in Valdesalor is quite new and is conveniently the first building in the town. Notice all the pilgrim laundry hanging on the…

Day 11. Mérida to Aljucén (17 km)

Mérida might be the perfect place to start a Camino. It is a small but interesting city for a pre-Camino rest day, and the next day’s walk is really nice. It begins with a stroll past this Roman aqueduct. And a quick inspection of a Roman dam… What a gorgeous day! Now in Aljucén at…

Day 10. Torremejia to Mérida (16 km)

Once past the 3 or 4 days of bad jet lag, I’ve been sleeping well – both in private rooms and with company. Today’s walk featured MUD! Not deep stuff, but persistent. It accumulated until my boots were heavy, and there was no way to avoid it. That lovely red clay, that the olives and…

Day 9. Villafranca to Torremejia (27 km)

Long walk, basically alone – flat, good walking surface (packed dirt farm road), through olive groves, vineyards and grain fields. Not especially scenic except for some nice colours and distinguished olive trees. Easy walking except there is no place to sit even for a 15 minute rest. Perching on a granite marker is not comfortable…

Day 8. Zafra to Villafranca de los Barros (20 km)

Our boots were barely dry this morning and the weather uncertain. K decided to take a rest day, but R and I took to the road. The day turned out fine for walking. Or cycle… The highlight of the day was grilled cod at restaurant Jero in Villafranca… Followed by a good night’s sleep in…
